There can be few more stimulating courses than Luffness New. On good and bad days, Luffness offers a feeling of escape, allied to a sense of challenge and enjoyment that few other courses can match.
Luffness New is among that wonderful grouping of links courses around Gullane wherein echoes some of the most important elements of Scotlands golf history.
Old Tom Morris laid out the original course, and today's course shows very little changes from his design.
The course can be hard – mighty hard – when the wind blows down the Forth and the rough is thick enough to whet the whistle of a hungry herd. There are distinctive bunkers too but, like all great courses, Luffness rewards the virtues. The fairways are beautifully kept, and golfers who can keep the ball down the middle won't have to worry, but there is plenty of trouble for the wanderers.
The bunkers are placed fairly to punish the errant shot. The course measures 6,328 yards, par-70. On Scotland's coasts wind can be an incalculable hazard, the second, ninth, and eighteenth fall into this category.
