Golf Course/
St Andrews Old

The Old Course at St. Andrews is considered to be the birthplace of golf, with evidence of play on the links land beside the town dating back to the 1500s. It is the most famous golf course in world golf and the Mecca to which every golfer aspires to make pilgrimage at least once in a golfing lifetime.

It is here that the ghosts of Old Tom Morris and Allan Robertson roam the ancient links and where the rules and standards that have set golf apart as the game of highest principle and personal integrity have long since been set down.

The Old Course is the classic seaside links although the sea is seldom in view other than at the first and last holes. The golf course remains a challenge with golf's largest greens, 14 holes share a green with another (and each combination of holes, like No. 2 and No. 16 add up to 18).

There are no great sand dunes, the fairways are wide and the double greens immense but the bunkering and there are 112 of them, are among the severest to be found on a golf course anywhere the game is played.

It also has a unique, counter-clockwise routing, which means out-of-bounds is usually right of the fairway, while another hole's fairway is left. Today, it's the most consistent Open Championship host, staging the event every five years.
