Hahn makes a name for himself with playoff victory

A brace of birdies in the playoff caps off his first PGA Tour title at Northern Trust Open

He was playing on what is now known as PGA Tour Canada. To say he was struggling is something of an understatement – Hahn barely had $200 in his pocket and was looking at having to borrow money to pay his caddie and book a flight home.

“And I’m sitting there on the computer going on Craigslist and I start looking for jobs,” said Hahn, who remembers being more than a little embarrassed at his situation.

“It just kind of hit me, like, hey, you have an opportunity to do something with your life. And I was wasting it just hanging out with friends, partying on the weekends. I wasn’t putting the time in.”

Hahn went on to finish eighth that week in Edmondton, winning about $3,000 that in retrospect, he said, felt like at least $1 million. He kept his card that year and the next, then made his way onto the Web.com Tour.

“And from there, it was just a matter of time,” Hahn said.

Even so, the humble Korean-American couldn’t stop saying “Wow” on Sunday when he outlasted Dustin Johnson and Paul Casey in a playoff to win the Northern Trust Open. The victory in his 65th start was the first of his PGA Tour career – moving him to eighth in the FedExCup and landing Hahn a spot in the Masters Tournament.

As excited as Hahn was on Sunday, though, he has another very important event looming large on the horizon. He’s planning to take the next month off as he awaits the birth of his daughter.

“That, to me, kind of humbles myself and kind of brings me down to reality that, you know, I’m going to be a dad here in three weeks,” Hahn said. “I couldn’t be more excited, and more nervous that we don’t have a name picked out yet.

“I’m going to have to talk to my wife about Riviera. I think that’s a good name.Prior to Sunday’s victory at “the Riv,” Hahn probably was best-known for the Gangnam Style dance he performed at the 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale during the 2013 Waste Management Phoenix Open.
